Charging your EV when you are out on the road might seem straightforward, as you only need to pull up to the charging station, plug it in, and then unplug it. While this might seem easy, there are some rules and regulations that you need to follow each time you head down to the charging station. Here at Fullerton Ford, we want to help you with all of the unwritten rules you will need to follow the next time you visit a charging station to charge your EV. Many of these things seem like common sense, but following these rules will ensure that other vehicles can charge up. Only Charge at Charging Stations
This might seem like a no-brainer, but it's worth mentioning that charging stations are only for charging. Therefore, once your vehicle is done completely charging, you will need to find another place to park the vehicle. This is extremely important as there could be a driver that is low on charge and might need to use the charging bay. There is no reason to park your vehicle in a charging bay if you are not charging, so make sure you are parking there while charging your vehicle. Once you leave the charging bay, make sure you leave it in a good place for the next driver by doing things such as putting away the charging cables when you're done. This might be a tripping hazard, and the weather can damage the cables.
Plan Your Charging Times
Public charging areas operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with few to go around. Before you head out to charge, ensure you know where the different charging points are on your journey. You will need to be mindful of how long it will take to reach a maximum charge for your vehicle. Remember that you must move your vehicle once it has been charged. In addition, be sure that you make some preparations before you start charging, as several apps are available that will let you know where the chargers around town are. If your battery is almost drained, you can politely ask another EV driver if you can use their charging space as soon as they are done. Be sure to pay it forward in the future, as being polite makes things so much easier.
When Charging
Once your vehicle has been plugged in, you need to make sure that your vehicle is charging before you start to move away from the vehicle. This will prevent everyone from having to wait a long period of time as your vehicle charges. Also, never unplug another vehicle so that you can charge your own. The only time this is ever a good idea is if the driver has left a note on their vehicle telling other drivers that you can unplug them. Never be selfish, as other drivers will need to charge as well!
Rapid Charging
You should only plug your EV into a DC Fast Charging bay when it needs to charge rapidly. When your vehicle is good to go, you need to move it out of the space. Only fast-charging SUVs should be allowed to use the fast charger, which makes it essential that you know everything about your EV. If your battery is relatively full, you should never stop at a busy charging point if your battery is at 80%. Just because you can charge your vehicle doesn't mean you have to, so be mindful of others. Finally, never block the charging bay, especially if you have a diesel or gas-powered vehicle. Never park in the charging bay if you have a vehicle that uses gasoline.
