Ford Announces Electric Future Plans

The second Ford EV battery is known as the LFP battery and will allow all Ford EV drivers to choose a unique battery performance that is most aligned with their needs. These batteries are very durable and can tolerate faster charging while utilizing fewer high-demand, high-cost materials and reducing drivers' costs. Even before the battery plant opens, Ford is introducing these new LFP batteries to the Mustang Mach-E this year and the Ford F-150 Lightning in 2024 to increase the production capacity so that they can reduce the wait times for customers. These new LFP batteries will be manufactured in the United States, and Ford is excited to bring them to you. 

With Michigan's all-new battery production facility, the company will produce approximately 35-gigawatt hours per year of new battery capacity capable of powering 400,000 future Ford EVs. As part of Ford's impeccable plan to offer unique battery chemistry and source in key regions where its EVs are produced, the company has even reached a new agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, the world's leading manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles. With this new arrangement, Ford's wholly-owned subsidiary would manufacture all of the battery cells using LFP battery cell knowledge and services provided by CATL. Engineers of Ford vehicles will integrate these LFP battery cells into their EV  vehicles. All of this adds to the new battery capacity and available battery technology made possible through a series of collaborations, including with SK On and LG Energy Solution. 

The LFP battery technology helps reduce reliance on minerals such as nickel and cobalt, which is in line with Ford's work in creating an EV supply chain that will uphold the auto companies' commitment to sustainability and human rights. Ford is already committed to achieving carbon neutrality globally with all of its vehicles, operations, and supplies by 2050 and was among the first American automakers to collaborate with the international community to limit the impacts of global warming as part of the Paris Agreement. Ford has also joined RouteZero, committed to working toward zero-emission vehicles by 2040 globally. Ford is also the only automaker to produce a human rights report. 

Ford is ensuring that 245 acres at the southern edge of the new battery site are placed into a conservation easement. This land is located along the Kalamazoo River and will be preserved for generations to come and then protected against future industrial development. Ford will also work with government officials and leaders in the community to protect natural resources and recreation near the facility. It's all part of the company's commitment to be a good neighbor. The Ford Fund will also contribute resources to help the community explore the best way to deal with the communal land.
