Cold Weather Tips for your Ford Lightning EV

Cold Weather Tips for your Ford Lightning EV

Cold Weather Tips for your Ford Lightning EV

The Ford F-150 Lightning is Built Ford Tough, which means it has been tested in extremely cold conditions. However, every electric vehicle experience energy decreases in cold temperatures due to battery cell chemistry. Temperatures below 40°F cause the electrolyte fluid to become sluggish, limiting how much power is available to discharge and how quickly the vehicle's battery can charge. Ford and Fullerton Ford want to help make you aware that in low temperatures, they could see a significant reduction in range, which is normal.

Keep your F-150 Lightning plugged in when parked.

Park your F-150 Lightning in a garage or undercover whenever possible. When you are at home or out, it is best to park inside a parking structure rather than outside in the elements. If you have a garage at home, park inside or if you are at a Mall or out and about, opt for a parking structure where it's a little warmer for your battery. Plus, it will help keep your Lightning from getting covered in snow, which can add more weight and drag to your EV.

Plan accordingly, as charging may take more time in cold temperatures.

If planning a longer commute, precondition your vehicle using departure times to warm the battery while plugged in by using the FordPass app or your truck's center screen. Your Ford Lightning has a Battery Management System, also called the BMS, which regulates your charging speed. Think of this as your battery's brain. It always ensures your battery is safe and running at peak performance. The Battery Management System may limit your charging speeds when it's cold outside to keep the battery safe. As your battery's temperature warms up to the ideal range for its chemistry, your BMS will speed up its charging limits.

Try using your heater as little as possible.

If your F-150 Lightning has heated seats and steering wheel, use them as your primary heat to reduce energy consumed by HVAC. Seat and steering wheel warmers use less energy than heating your whole car. Both EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles lose power due to heat loss, but internal combustion engines generate more heat, which is used to warm up the car. When charging, turn off the heater if possible, or lower the temperature enough to remain comfortable.

Drive Conservatively

Keep driving speeds moderate in cold temperatures, as high speeds use more energy. No matter the weather, one factor that always affects your mileage range is how you drive your Lighting. Excessive acceleration/braking and driving at high speeds all drain battery life. This will not only be better for your mileage range, but it'll also keep you and your passengers safer on those wintery roads. Another thing to remember is that the regenerative braking system will be less effective in extreme cold because cold batteries can't accept as much energy as warm batteries can.

Check your tires are at the proper pressure.

Tire pressure drops as the temperature falls, which causes greater rolling resistance and reduced mileage range. Therefore, checking your Ford Lightning's tire pressure every month is recommended, particularly as the outside temperatures change considerably with the seasons. Doing so could save you as much as 13% of your average range!
